B3 Labs utilises a wide range of naturally occurring terpenes in our CBD products, delivering…
Citral is a common terpene found in CBD products, but can also be found naturally in a variety of everyday plants such as citrus fruits, lemongrass and apricots. Citral is also commonly used in fragrances, household cleaning products, and toiletries due to its natural citrus scent. Our guide to Citral will take you through what Citral is, its uses, and what some of the holistic medicinal benefits of Citral are.
What is Citral?
Citral is one of the most commonly used terpenes due to its natural citrus odour and flavour. Citral has been used holistically for thousands of years, claiming to have benefits such as helping a person to focus and antibacterial properties.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds and essential oils found in everyday plants and herbs, however they are commonly associated with cannabis due to their high concentration within the cannabis plant. Citral is responsible for the citrus smell and flavour often found in CBD products.
What is Citral found in?
Citral is an essential oil naturally found in plants and herbs such as citrus fruits, lemongrass, apricots, and the verbena plant. It is also commonly found in various strains of the cannabis plant, responsible for the citrus scent and flavouring found in some varieties.
Aroma and flavour profile of Citral
If you’ve ever experienced CBD products or cannabis that has a citrus scent, Citral may be one of the main terpenes of the product.
Citral has a strong flavour and scent of lemon, as its name suggests. Citral is an essential oil that is used in perfumery because of its strong scent, and used as a natural lemon flavouring in food and drink. CBD manufacturers often used citral to give CBD products a natural lemon flavour.
Is Citral safe?
Citral is a naturally occurring compound in everyday plants and herbs, and is completely safe to use. In fact, you’ve more than likely already ingested it without knowing. The question of safety in regards to ingesting Citral comes from the use of cannabis, of which Citral is a common compound.
What is Citral used for?
Citral has been used for thousands of years as a holistic medicine by traditional healers, claiming a range of medicinal benefits. These include:
Whilst other terpenes are known to aid sleep or as a sedative, one of the key uses of citral by holistic healers is to help individuals focus. If you have a big deadline coming up, or need to knuckle down, citral could help you to concentrate.
Research from 2010 found that citral essential oils have antibacterial properties. Traditional healers have used terpenes such as Citral for centuries for their antibacterial benefits against infections and other conditions.
Traditional healers have also used Citral for many years as an antifungal treatment for conditions such as athlete’s foot. Research from 1996 states that the treatment must contain 2.5% citral (or other relevant terpenes) to be effective.
Stress and anxiety
Citral has been used as a holistic treatment for stress and anxiety for many years, particularly when taken as a CBD product or cannabis. Terpenes’ synergy with the compounds of cannabinoids is thought to amplify holistic medicinal benefits. This is known as the entourage effect. Citral is also used as an aromatherapy treatment against stress and anxiety.
Several terpenes are known to be used by traditional healers for pain relief, due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Limonene, Myrcene, and Alpha-Pinene are other common terpenes used for pain relief benefits.
Can you get high from Citral?
Terpenes themselves cannot get you high. You would need to consume the terpene in conjunction with cannabis to achieve a high. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive element in cannabis that provides the high.
Because of this, terpenes found in CBD products in the UK are also unlikely to provide a high, as the law states that CBD products must contain less than 0.2% THC.
