Citral is a common terpene found in CBD products, but can also be found naturally…
B3 Labs utilises a wide range of naturally occurring terpenes in our CBD products, delivering a wide range of natural effects. Our blends feature common terpenes that occur naturally in cannabis as well as many other plants and fruits in nature. In this blog, we explain what the terpenes are in your CBD products.
What are Terpenes?
Although commonly associated with cannabis, terpenes are aromatic compounds found in everyday plants such as citrus fruits, lemongrass, and herbs such as basil and rosemary. Terpenes are more commonly associated with cannabis due to their high concentration in the cannabis plant.
What are Terpenes Used For?
Manufacturers use terpenes as flavourings and scents in both everyday items and in CBD products, but CBD manufacturers will also use specific terpenes for intentional efficacy and to create an entourage effect in their products.
What is the Entourage Effect?
The entourage effect refers to the effect that CBD has on the body when multiple cannabis compounds are combined to amplify existing benefits or to add additional benefits. B3 Labs blends broad spectrum distillate CBD with various terpenes to create an entourage effect in some of our products.
Are Terpenes Legal in the UK?
Use of terpenes is legal in the UK and is generally considered to be safe. However, what causes the question is the use of controlled cannabis substances. CBD (and CBD terpene blends) is legal in the UK, however the law states that CBD products must contain no more than 0.2% THC.
How Do Terpenes Affect the Body?
Terpenes are not psychoactive, and will not cause a high commonly associated with use of cannabis. However, terpenes have been used in traditional herbal medicines for centuries, claiming to have benefits ranging from sleep aid and sedation, to stress and anxiety relief, and even antiviral and antibacterial properties.
What Terpenes do B3 Labs Use?
B3 uses a variety of terpenes for both efficacy and as natural aromas and flavourings. Here are a few that we we blend with high quality CBD to create our unique white label products:
Myrcene is one of the most common Terpenes found in cannabis, recognisable for its earthy scent and flavour. You’ll also find it in other plants such as mango, basil, and lemongrass. Whilst there is not enough research at present to state the effects that Myrcene might have on humans, it’s synergy with cannabinoids is thought to amplify medicinal benefits. This is known as the entourage effect. B3 Labs blends high-quality CBD with Myrcene to create products with a high intentional efficacy.
Citral is found naturally in various citrus fruits, apricots and lemongrass. Citral has been used in herbal medicines for many years, claiming to have sedative, antiviral and antibacterial benefits. Citral is also often used as a natural flavouring and fragrance, ensuring amazing taste in our terpene vape products.
Limonene is one of the most common cannabis Terpenes after Myrcene. It can also be found in the rinds of citrus fruits and various botanicals. Limonene has been used in traditional medicines for centuries, thought to provide stress and anxiety relief, as well as having antifungal and antibacterial properties. As such traditional practitioners have used limonene to treat such ailments as acne and athlete’s foot.
As the name suggests, Eucalyptol is the terpene responsible for the scent of the eucalyptus plant and tea tree. As such, you’re probably already quite familiar with it. The strong aroma of Eucalyptol has been used in herbal medicine for centuries as a decongestant and as an antibacterial treatment for minor cuts and scrapes and acne.
You’re likely already familiar with Alpha-Humulene as it is found in a range of everyday plants such as sage, ginger and hops – the principle ingredient in beer. Alpha Humulene has also been used in traditional herbal medicines over the years due to claims of anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
Beta-Caryophyllene has a strong peppery scent that is often used as a main ingredient in chewing gum. In traditional herbal medicine, it is often used as a painkiller and as an anti-inflammatory treatment.
Terpinolene is commonly found in everyday plants such as nutmeg and apples. Whilst not the most commonly used terpene, Terpinolene is used in CBD products for its fresh scent. It has been used in traditional herbal medicine for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, and is commonly used in household cleaning products.
Alpha Pinene (and Beta Pinene)
It will probably come as no surprise to learn that Alpha Pinene has a natural scent of pine. It is one of the most common terpenes found in cannabis, but can also be found in the oils of conifer trees, eucalyptus oil and orange peel. Similar to Eucalyptol, traditional healers have used Alpha and Beta Pinenes for centuries to treat congestion and infection.
Terpineol is often used to create pleasant scents in toiletries such as soaps and lotions due to its pine-based aroma. Like many terpenes, it has been used by traditional healers for purposes such as relaxation, sedation and for its antibiotic properties. It is naturally found in various plants such as lilacs, pine trees and lime blossoms.
There isn’t too much research on the benefits of Ocimene, however it is commonly found in hops, mangos and peppers, and has a distinctly sweet and herbaceous flavour. It is often used in the perfume industry for its sweet, floral aroma.
Whilst there isn’t much modern research into Alpha Phellandrene, it has been used in traditional eastern medicine for many years for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. It has a natural woody aroma with hints of mint and citrus and is commonly found in mint, cinnamon, and dill.
