Does CBD Work to Alleviate Period Pain?

CBD is reported to have a wide range of benefits, including chronic pain management, but what about period pain? In this article, we take a look at whether CBD can help to ease period pain and other menstrual symptoms, as well as looking into how it works. Keep reading to learn more about CBD for period pain.

Does CBD help to alleviate period pain?

There is currently a lack of research into CBD for menstrual pain and other symptoms, however there are countless testimonials praising CBD for pain relief, relief from nausea, and CBD affecting moods. That being said, there are a number of studies that focus on the role of CBD in aiding chronic pain.

Similarly, there have been initial studies into CBD for nausea, anxiety, stress, and inflammation. However, any good scientist will tell you that more research is needed into the medical benefits of CBD.

But, if you’re at your wits end with your monthly period pain and symptoms, CBD is a safe alternative to try.

How does CBD work for period pain relief?

According to Harvard Medical School, the current understanding of how CBD works to alleviate pain is through the endocannabinoid, inflammatory, and nociceptive systems. There is separate research into CBD for inflammation, but the endocannabinoid system consists of cannabinoid receptors that interact with our own naturally occurring cannabinoids.

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating a variety of functions in the body, including metabolism, mood, anxiety, and pain perception. All of which are commonly reported benefits of using CBD, therefore it is not unreasonable to assume that there could be some relationship between the endocannabinoid system and the use of CBD.

That being said, the claims mentioned above are largely anecdotal, and further research is required to fully understand the benefits of CBD.

Don’t forget about terpenes…

Whilst CBD does have  its own reported benefits, it’s often the terpenes within the CBD that do a lot of the hard work. Myrcene is one of the most common terpenes found in CBD and, according to traditional healers, is responsible for the pain-relieving effects of CBD and cannabis as a whole.

Other terpenes that have been used by traditional healers for pain relief include:

  • Linalool
  • Pinene
  • Limonene
  • Caryophyllene

How to take CBD for period pain

When taking CBD for the first time, the general rule of thumb is to start with a low dose for a few weeks, and build up your dosage as necessary until you find your sweet spot.

Don’t just take CBD throughout your bleeding period, though. There won’t be enough time for the CBD to take any real effect in your system. Try taking CBD regularly in the month leading up to your next period in order to notice any real effects, and continue throughout the bleeding period.

How you ingest CBD is completely down to personal preference. There is an abundance of CBD products on the market, including oils and tinctures, vapes and e-liquids, and CBD gummies. You can also choose to purchase CBD as Broad Spectrum, or as CBD Isolate. Learn more about that here.

How long does CBD last for period pain?

The effects of CBD for pain can last anywhere from 2-6 hours, however this largely depends on your body, how much you take, and how you take it.

Experts recommend the use of vapes to alleviate pain as it allows the CBD to enter the body directly, with quicker access to the endocannabinoid system. That being said, some argue that edibles and CBD gummies will have effects that last longer as they have to pass through the digestive system.
